SUMMARY:We the People hosts Rep. Ellen Troxclair
DESCRIPTION:We the People Lake Travis welcomes Ellen Troxclair to discuss the 87th legislative session followed by the special session and the bills she has filed. Q & A are welcomed after her talk. \nWhat is the special session and why is it happening in Texas? \nIn the Legislature\, a special session is when lawmakers convene outside the regular session usually to complete unfinished tasks for the year\, or address special topics and emergencies. In Texas\, special sessions are only to be called by the governor. \nGov. Greg Abbott called a special session of the Texas Legislature\, which started July 8 and is set to last up to 30 days\, to address bills that died at the end of the regular legislative session like the election and bail bills. This comes after the regular 87th legislative session\, which ended on May 31.

SUMMARY:UPDATE! HB 900 PASSED! WE DID IT!!!
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE!!! 5/24/2023  \nAs most know\, HB 900 “The Reader Act” passed the Senate on 3 rd reading last night at midnight.\nIt’s on its way to the Governor. This is a huge win for Texas parents and all those brave enough\nto send\, show and read in school board meetings and Legislative hearings. We did it! Praise\nGod.\nHighlights:\n School districts must develop a book policy that prohibits the possession\, acquisition\nand purchase of harmful library materials\, rated sexually explicit\, pervasively vulgar or\neducationally unsuitable. This broad definition strengthens the bill.\n It requires book vendors to rate their books if sexually explicit or sexually relevant if\nthey want to sell to school districts in Texas. If a vendor fails to comply or correct a\nrating\, Texas schools may not purchase books from that vendor. This is huge\, because it\nforces corporations profiting from harmful library materials to be accountable.\nDue to the size and buying power of Texas\, it has the ability to leverage its size to force\ncorporations to do the right thing. Historically\, our leaders rarely make this stand. Let this be\njust the beginning. This is model legislation that every state can replicate to protect children. \nCALL and thank your State Representatives TODAY!!\nPLEASE DO YOUR PART! Click on link below! \nHB 900 is the library book bill written to prohibit sexually explicit books in K-12 libraries and hold book vendors liable for rating content of the same. The bill passed the House with bipartisan support. It has been on the Senate calendar for 3 consecutive days\, but has not been reached. The following link allows you to enter your identifying information and send a message to all the Senators and the Lt. Governor at the same time. It is very easy and very fast. Please take a minute and help push this bill to a vote. \nhttps://grassrootspriorities.com/index.php?t=4&a=47

SUMMARY:CALL TO ACTION!!! Texas Legislative Bills!! Click on links below and leave messages!!!
DESCRIPTION:Patriots\, \nWe are at the end of another Texas legislative session. Many good bills are held up in the procedural web of the legislature. Every session feels like a last minute disappointment as we all hold our breath hoping good bills pass before May 29th. It is difficult to understand the pushback and hurdles when Republicans have held a majority in the House\, Senate and Governor’s office for more than 20 years. We cannot allow what we see to discourage our involvement or our prayers. Let us be known as a generation that did not stand by and watch our liberties destroyed. What will you say when your children ask\, “What did you do when you first knew there was a war on our freedoms\, country and the state of Texas?” \nSB 163 Campbell – Parental approval for participation in sexuality instruction aka “Opt In”. Passed the Senate. House hearing is today on 5/9/23. Submit your comments to the committee HERE. \nSB 12 Hughes – Restrict Sexually oriented performances aka Drag Queen Story Hour bill. Passed the Senate. House hearing is on 5/10/23. Submit your comments to the committee tomorrow HERE. \nSB 29 Birdwell – Ban Vaccine Mandate for Covid 19. Passed the Senate. House hearing is on 5/10/23. Submit your comments to the committee tomorrow HERE \nHB 20 Schaefer – Border protection bill. HB 20 is being debated on the House floor today. Once passed it will be referred to a Senate committee. \nHB 900 Patterson – Regulating library books in public schools. Passed the House. The bill was referred to the Senate education committee on 5/2/23. It needs to be scheduled for a hearing. Senator Campbell is the vice chair of the committee and represents most of us as our Senator. \nCall senator Campbells office at 512-463-0125 and urge a Senate committee hearing.\nSB 14 Campbell – Prohibiting the gender reassignment of minors. Passed the Senate. It was set on the House floor on Tuesday and Friday last week and was defeated by Democrat procedural points of order. It is set on the floor calendar for the third time on Friday May 12th. Please pray for passage. \nElection Bills\nThe Texas legislature passed major reforms of our election process in the 2021 special session. (required b/c Democrats fled the state to avoid quorum in regular session) The Legislature\, in whole\, seems hesitant to work on elections although it is the number one Republican party priority. There is a lot of work needed to secure our elections. \nRPT Legislative Priorities summary found HERE.
